Fried carp served with a creamy potato salad, a traditional Czech Christmas dish.

Why try it?

This dish stands at the heart of Czech Christmas traditions, symbolizing the blend of family customs and religious practices. Eating carp on Christmas Eve is an age-old ritual that connects the past with present in Czech households, embodying warmth and celebration.

How it tastes

The carp is crispy on the outside with a tender, juicy interior, complemented by a potato salad that is creamy and rich yet refreshingly light with a tangy twist. The dish presents a harmonious balance of flavors, appealing to both crisp and creamy lovers.

Origin & History — first documented: 1850

The tradition of eating carp during Christmas in the Czech Republic started in the 19th century as fish farming developed in Central Europe. It became symbolic of abundance, as well as a lighter option preceding the more indulgent meals of the Christmas season.
