Alcatra has its roots in the Azorean island of Terceira from the 16th century, made for festive occasions using clay pots and is now a beloved recipe throughout Portugal.

Ingredients

  • 🥩 500 g beef
  • 🍷 300 ml red wine
  • 🧂 1 cinnamon stick
  • 🧂 4 cloves
  • 🧄 5 cloves garlic
  • 🧄 1 large onion
  • 🥩 100 g bacon
  • 🌿 2 bay leaves
  • 🫒 60 ml olive oil

Method

  1. 1 Brown beef chunks and sliced bacon in olive oil.
  2. 2 Add onions, garlic, cinnamon, cloves, and bay leaves, then deglaze with red wine.
  3. 3 Cover and simmer on low heat for several hours until meat is tender.
  4. 4 Serve hot, garnished with fresh herbs if desired.
