A simple and hearty mutton and cabbage stew, considered the national dish of Norway.

Why try it?

Fårikål embodies the essence of Norwegian home cooking—simple, nourishing, and shared with family. It is a symbol of autumn in Norway, often enjoyed as a communal meal when the cabbage harvest is abundant.

How it tastes

Fårikål has a rich and savory flavor, with tender pieces of mutton juxtaposed against soft, sweet cabbage. Generous use of peppercorns infuses a warming spice that complements the mild sweetness of the dish.

Origin & History — first documented: 1800

Originally a rural innovation from the early 19th century, fårikål quickly spread throughout Norway due to its simplicity and availability of ingredients. By the mid-20th century, it was declared the national dish of Norway, celebrated annually with Fårikålfest on the last Thursday of September.
