A fried dish of bacon, potatoes, and onions.

Why try it?

Tyrolean Gröstl is a quintessential alpine dish designed to revive spirits and warm souls, often serving as a perfect conclusion to a day of skiing or hiking. It’s enjoyed in both family homes and traditional inns across Innsbruck.

How it tastes

Crispy on the outside with tender interiors, Gröstl combines the smoky richness of bacon with sweet, caramelized onions and golden potatoes. It's typically finished with a sprinkle of chives and a fried egg on top, adding a creamy, yolky sauce.

Origin & History — first documented: 1850

Developed in the 19th century, Gröstl originated as a practical way to use leftover meats and potatoes, typical in the Tyrolean region. Its rustic and hearty nature made it a staple in mountain refuges and traditional Tyrolean dining.
