Seasoned grilled eel served on steamed rice.

Why try it?

Anago Meshi highlights Hiroshima's rich maritime culture and its proximity to the sea, making seafood a staple and testament to the city's fresh and local produce.

How it tastes

The eel is tender and sweet, enhanced by a smoky grill flavor, while the rice provides a subtle balance, absorbing the rich juices.

Origin & History — first documented: 1890

Initially a meal for railway travelers in the 19th century, Anago Meshi became popular due to its convenience and the abundance of eels in Hiroshima Bay, emerging as a cooked delicacy in train station bento boxes.

  • 🌾 300 g sushi rice
  • 🥣 30 ml soy sauce
  • 🍯 30 ml mirin
